Shifting Horizons; pen on paper; September 8, 2024
One of the things I love about the southwest is the horizon. There are places that landscape is so open, and the sky is so big, that it seems you can see forever.
For me, a horizon shifts my focus out of the details into the big picture. Horizons seem to invite me into something bigger, into the future, into the distance. My eyes find ease around horizons, in fact, my entire body relaxes around horizons.
And then, with just a slight movement of your eyes, the horizon shifts. Sometimes it is a glance in a different direction, sometimes it is the clouds and shadows that change the horizon, and sometimes it is the heat and sun blurring the edge of the world.
Much as I love horizons, horizons are not stable. You can never get to the horizon as there’s always new horizon in front of you. The path is always opening and moving.
I’ve met people who find horizons disorienting. I’ve met others who feel forests are claustrophobic. I appreciate both, but I can feel the ache in my body when I’ve been in one too long.
What calls you? Horizons or dense forests? Oceans or paths along rivers? Big sky or dense foliage?
Whatever it is, I hope you’re able to find the places that open your heart!
