I lit a candle next to me while in the back yard to watch it and focus on intention.
It had been very peaceful and quiet in the neighborhood, but as soon as I lit that flame, a car alarm went off, the trash trucks went up and down the roads, someone started mowing their yard, and dogs started barking.
I had to keep bringing my attention and intention back to the candle.
I noticed that, so long as the flame was present, the melted wax kept dripping down the side of the candle. The commotion didn’t make it burn faster or slow. The commotion didn’t stop the wax from dripping. The commotion didn’t change the flame or the candle.
The commotion only changed me.
But once I just let the commotion be whatever it was going to be, I could keep my attention and intention on the candle.
I think this is a metaphor for our times.
The world is spinning chaotically on so many fronts and there are manipulative agendas to steal our focus and purpose. I can focus on the chaotic spinning and agendas, or I can focus on my flame (purpose).
When I focus on the commotion in the world, I get sucked into the agendas, manipulation, and chaos.
When I focus on my purpose, things happen. And, I like to hope and believe that those things help someone else as well.
